Directional Brake Pads: Why Correct Installation Is Essential for Comfort and Safety
Directional brake pads are designed to deliver optimal performance and reduce unwanted issues such as noise, vibration, and uneven wear. Their asymmetric design – featuring chamfers, slots, and mounting indicators – ensures progressive and uniform contact with the disc, improving both comfort and braking safety.
Improper installation can lead to:
- Annoying noises (squealing, squeaking) during braking.
- Vibrations that compromise driving comfort.
- Accelerated wear of pads and discs.
- Reduced braking performance.
How to Identify Directional Pads
Chamfers on the friction surface
The chamfer prevents the brake pad from lifting off the disc when braking. During installation, make sure that the bigger chamfer area is first to contact the brake disc as it revolves.
Arrows on the anti-noise shim
The arrows indicate the disc rotational direction, which means they should be taken into account when fitting the pads inside the caliper body.
You need to make sure the arrow is pointing in exactly the same direction in which the wheels revolve when the vehicle is in motion.
Half-moon slot on anti-noise shim
Positioned on the leading edge of the pad, where initial contact with the disc occurs.
Letters L/R
Sometimes you may find the capital letters L “left” or R “right”, to indicate the side of the vehicle on which the brake pad should be fitted.
Practical Installation Guidelines
- Always check the presence of chamfers, slots, and mounting indicators.
- Clean the caliper, guides, and contact surfaces.
- Apply specific grease on contact points between the brake pad and the bracket.
- Ensure proper sliding of the caliper and retention springs.
- After installation, perform a bedding-in procedure to stabilize pad-disc contact.
Always follow Brembo’s installation instructions to ensure safety, comfort, and durability of the braking system.
